Project: This retired couple lives in Tigard. Colleen, a retired school teacher, has great difficulty walking. She contends daily with chronic back pain, weakness and limited mobility due to degeneration of the spine. Her husband walks with a walker due to an injury from a fall.
The bathroom was not usable for Colleen since once she got in the bathroom with her wheelchair she could not move her chair around to maneuver to the sink, tub or toilet.
Another barrier in the home was a stoop at the front entrance of the home that was very difficult for the couple to maneuver by themselves.
Remodeling the existing main bathroom was not an option. There was just not room to make the space bigger. ReFIT designers drew up a workable space out of the small bathroom beside the laundry room so that it could house a roll–in shower & wall hung sink. To help ease access for the couple into and out of the home we added a concrete ramp to the front entrance of the house, widened the doorway of the front door and added a handrail to the garage entrance into the house.

Result: Now the couple can enter their home safely with the aid of the ramp and handrail. Bathing and toilet use are made much easier and safer with the roll in shower and can be done independently without assistance from others.
